Using Video on LinkedIn
LOS ANGELES - Job seekers, watch and learn: Susan McKenna, Director of Internet Marketing at BORBA, has posted on her LinkedIn biopage a recent interview with ad blogger Jolie O'Dell. Look under Websites, where it says "See Me @ Direct Response, 5/7/08."
This is a great idea. It seems like such an obvious thing to do, yet this is the first time I've seen it on LinkedIn. Although I have never spoken with Susan, I can tell that she is smart, likable, and has a teachable point of view on direct mail, mobile commerce, social media, and online retailing. This helps me imagine how she would handle a tough multichannel job interview. Her speech is colorful, fluid, and dynamic. Nice smile. Good eye contact. Very hire-able.
You can tell that Susan knows her stuff, which is why Jolie interviewed her in the first place. I admire Susan for having the gumption to present at a Direct Response event in front of a room full of her peers. That shows confidence. Also, I like the fact that this video is just over two minutes in length. It's perfectly timed, with a beginning, a middle, and an end.
The only things I'd change about Susan's LinkedIn bio is that she should add a photo of herself, and her bio copy seems to be written more for SEM than people (always a difficult trade-off). She's obviously very warm in person, so this is an easy fix.
Candidates: If you have videos of yourselves, please upload them to YouTube and link them to your LinkedIn page. And if you have any speaking gigs scheduled, make sure they get recorded for either a video or podcast -- whichever is your strong suit.

Harry, just caught this topic during a listen to Animal's show snippets.
Did some poking around, some link investigation, etc.
Had to LMFAO when I watched some vids by Jolie. Check out the related videos to this short 'brag' vid she made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKQl08pFf6s&feature=related
Funny as hell... LOLOLOLOL.

I am sure all of you have seen www.visualcv.com
Is this going to be the norm? I don't know... who's advantage is it?

Wow, Jolie's initial comment is especially rude, and baffling. Most people are appreciate to have their stuff linked to, as it adds to the whole viral power of the net...this does nothing except bring her added clicks, and she is upset by it. Bizarre, truly, especially as she seems web savvy otherwise.

Don't rip off my interviews? Is she kidding? Isn't linking to stuff the heart of the internet. I never of you Harry reviewed this little video. Now I have. Complain about that.
Hey, enough about that. I'm sure that you're a fine young woman. Seriously. But either you don't understand the net or I don't and of course I think it's you.
You're welcome to call into The Recruiting Animal Show on Wed when Harry is the guest because I'm going to talk about it there.

This issue has inspired a new post regarding video sharing (I've altered my tune a bit) as well as a new page on the blog about my sharing preferences. Thanks!
Also, Anonymous Person "I'mJustSayin", I'm not that young or that full of myself. I understand the Internet economy. And the Jerry Maguire clip falls under fair use. Go Internet stalk someone else. And leave a real name next time.

I guess I don't get it. Jolie is complaining that Harry 'ganked' her copyrighted content. So she must have a signed authorization to use the clip from Jerry McGuire in her blog, right?
How is this not hypocracy? And how did somebody so young get so full of herself so fast?

Welcome to Web 2.0 and social marketing. In a social community, all is fair. Isn't sharing part of the process?

No, the text of this post was not edited. However, my original post contained a garden variety video embed from YouTube, which has since been de-ganked at the video owner's request.

I am sorry, but I don't see where anything was ripped off in this post. Was this post edited from before? I just see an example of a simple reference and clear attribution of the referenced content (the interview video).
I like the post and idea!

Lolz, professionally produced video is for those who don't appreciate the ROI of UCG.

It's cool, would've appreciated a heads-up. =-)

I pays to know someone who can help you produce a professional video. I once had the opportunity to get it done for $600. It is better not to create a video if it is not a quality product.
If you have a web site, then by all means upload it to your server and make it directly viewable from your web site.
Like all good ideas, it takes energy and time. There is no doubt that a lot of us should just make this happen.
Thanks for sparking my memory on this.

As someone struggling with how best to use LI, I very much appreciate you bringing this subject up, simple as it seems. And Jolie, I enjoy your work, now that I've been introduced to it.

Jolie, thanks for writing. I meant no harm. I was just pointing out a nice use of video. It was a YouTube embed link, same as any other. You might wish to disable the embed feature on your YouTube page.
Readers, you can see the original video link on Susan McKenna's LinkedIn bio "See Me @ Direct Response, 5/7/08."

Thanks for the link, but you might have contacted me before ganking my copyrighted content. No sweat, I'm having dinner with my lawyer in a half hour because ppl just can't get enough of ripping off my videos.
Anyhow, enough about you.
Susan McKenna is an amazingly intelligent, warm woman. As a person, she's infinitely likeable and easy to communicate with. As a professional, she has a keen intuition for melding clients' ROI expectations with users' interactivity needs. She's the next big thing for incorporating social media and commerce.
And srsly, don't rip off my interviews, dude.
